How Long Does Landscape Fabric Last?

The lifespan of landscape fabric depends on its material, quality, and how it is installed and maintained. High-quality woven or non-woven synthetic fabrics can last anywhere from five to twenty years when covered with mulch, gravel, or soil to protect them from sunlight and wear.

Exposure to direct sunlight and heavy foot traffic can cause the fabric to deteriorate more quickly, breaking down into brittle pieces over time. Biodegradable fabrics made from natural fibers have a much shorter life, often lasting one to three years before decomposing. Regularly checking for tears, exposed edges, or areas where weeds have begun to grow can help extend the fabric’s usefulness.
