How long should a farm pond liner last?

The elements can take their toll on farm pond liners—but durable liners will go the distance. A lot of factors go into the lifespan of a pond liner. Those made from PVC, for example, may only last five to 10 years because UV exposure degrades them rapidly. Thickness and tear strength also play a part. Thinner liners will last less time, as will liners with reduced tear strength. Over time, shifting ground can cause leaks in thin liners.

Quality liners should get you at least twenty years—and many liners will last even longer than that. Several of BTL liners are rated for 20 years of UV exposure resistance, for example, and they’re thick with a multi-layered design that will prevent tears as the years go by. Investing in this kind of liner may cost more initially, but it will save you on time, water lost to leaks, and eventual repair and replacement costs.
