How many fish can you stock in a farm pond?

The answer depends on the type of fish you choose and the size of your pond. In a healthy one-acre pond that hasn’t been fertilized, you should be able to harvest around 40 pounds of bluegills, which is roughly 120 fish per year, and 10 pounds of bass, which is about eight to 10 fish per year.

To stock a one acre pond, recommendations are typically around 1,000 bluegills, between 50 and 100 bass, and 50 to 200 channel catfish. For fish like trout, you’ll need to make sure that there is a large enough natural food supply to support them, and that the water is cool enough for them to thrive. One acre, with enough food, can be stocked with 400 to 500 fingerlings if you want to produce four ounce fish, or 200 to 300 if you want to harvest seven to nine ounce fish.
