How Much Does a Turbidity Curtain Cost?

That’s a difficult question to answer, since different classes of turbidity curtains exist, and there are different types, sizes, and options. In general for a basic DOT type 1 curtain in the standard 50’ length, prices start around $500. The depth of the curtain, any customization, the number of units purchased, and shipping will affect the final price. A DOT type 1 curtain is suitable for protected water with minimal movement, not subject to tidal action or disturbance from winds. Ponds, shallow lakes, small streams and marshes are good examples. In some instances, a DOT-certified curtain may not even be required. In those cases, you might consider an “economy” type curtain. Either kind of Type 1 curtain will generally have basic foam floats with chain anchors, and a fairly lightweight textile for the curtain. Options such as filter skirts, tapered lengths or custom lengths will affect your price.

A DOT type 2 curtain in a standard 50’ length will generally start at around $1000. Type 2 curtains are suitable to control silt and turbidity in areas where moderate water movement is typical. Lakes, streams, slow-moving rivers, inter-coastal and areas with limited tidal and wave action are good examples. Typically, DOT type 2 curtains will have larger floats and may use cable anchors in place of chains. The connectors will be more durable, curtain fabric will be a heavier grade, and reinforcements may be applied. Basic DOT Type 3 curtains with minimal customization will usually start around $1200 per section. These curtains are suitable to moderately exposed locations subject to wind, waves and moving water. These curtains combine high strength fabric and heavy-duty tension members that can withstand extra wear and tear. Larger floats, extra reinforcements and ballasts, heavier fabrics, and options such as furling systems are typical. The needs of your particular application will determine whether a DOT certified curtain is required and what class of curtain is required.
