When installing landscape fabric, overlapping pieces by about 3 to 6 inches is generally recommended. A generous overlap creates a continuous barrier with no gaps where weeds can grow through.
In spots with heavier weed growth or on slopes, a slightly larger overlap can prevent soil from pushing the fabric apart over time. After overlapping, secure the edges with staples or pins to help the fabric lay flat keep it form moving when it's covered with mulch, gravel, or soil.
