The type of algae being farmed, the scale of production, and the farming method used all can effect how much space is needed in order to start an algae farm. Small-scale farms growing microalgae for research, supplements, or specialty products can operate in just a few square meters using indoor tanks or small outdoor ponds.
Larger commercial farms, especially those focused on biofuel production or bulk biomass, often require several acres to install large raceway ponds, open tanks, or extensive photobioreactor systems. Location also plays a key role, as outdoor farms need access to sunlight, flat land, and a reliable water source, while indoor systems need space for tanks, lighting, and climate control.
