In periods where water levels are low or a lack of rain isn’t keeping your farm pond full, it is normal to see the water level dip—but too much could signal a leak. How do you know when the water loss is too much? There are too many variables to develop a formula to show how much water will be lost to evaporation and other natural factors, unfortunately.
However, in extreme conditions, it isn’t unusual for the average pond to lose 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of water daily. Cloud cover, shade, wind speeds, precipitation, and humidity can all affect this number. If you’re relying on your farm pond to water animals or crops, though, it’s an important number to monitor so that you don’t run out of water.
