Aquaponics requires initial installation and investment to create a miniature artificial ecosystem, after which, maintenance becomes much simpler. Fish will need to be fed every day, and it's a good idea to do a standard health check when visiting with your fish. The temperature, pH, and ammonia/nitrate levels of our water should also be monitored either daily or weekly. The ideal pH for an aquaponics system is usually between 6.8 and 7.0. This will typically decrease over time, and can be raised by adding hydrated potash or lime.
While the natural balance between the fish and the plants should be able to mostly keep itself in check, outside factors can throw things out of whack just like in a real ecosystem. Ensuring that conditions are appropriate for what you're growing, as well as frequent visual checks on your plants and fish should keep your system healthy and thriving.
