Groundwater gets heavily filtered as it seeps through soil and small particles of rock, however, some chemicals and contanimants can survive through this filtering, and stay within the groundwater. Waste and debris will be caught in the particles of soil and sediment as the water travels downward. The vast majority of groundwater found in the world is fresh and used for drinking water around the world.
Contaminants can make their way into groundwater as its suspended in water traveling downwards into the soil. Industrial, agricultural, and household chemicals and waste can contaminate groundwater stores. This can cause serious issues if it makes its way into wellwater or springs that humans or animals use.
