is groundwater salty or fresh?

Groundwater can be both salty or freshwater, but the vast majority of water found in the soil is fresh and suitable for human use. Groundwater found closer to the coast is more likely to have higher salt levels than those further inland. However, salt may come from minerals and sediment within the aquifer itself, adding to the water's salinity.

The boundary between fresh and saline groundwater is referred to as the freshwater/saltwater interface.
