Landscape fabric can be effective for low-maintenance flower beds, but it is often not recommended for beds that are actively managed or contain plants that spread. Its primary benefit is suppressing annual weeds and retaining soil moisture, making it a good choice for established shrub or perennial beds.
However, it can make planting new flowers difficult, prevent existing perennials from spreading, and block organic mulch from enriching the soil. For annual beds or those with groundcovers, many gardeners prefer using only organic mulch, which suppresses weeds while improving soil health as it decomposes.
