Should a brine pond be double lined?

While it isn’t always necessary, it’s a wise idea to double line brine ponds—and in some cases, it may be required. This is usually true of brine ponds designed to contain highly toxic, contaminated, and highly concentrated brine mixtures. Whenever serious environmental or health concerns are a risk posed by spills or leakage, brine ponds should be double lined.

Contrary to popular belief, this doesn’t mean that when installing the pond, you will need to layer two liners, one over top the other. Rather, the common method is to place a geomembrane along the base of the pond, then place a thick layer of soil over that, then place the second liner on top of the soil. The soil in between the two liners acts almost like a preemptive sponge, designed to soak up spills or leaks should they occur so that they don’t reach the secondary liner. When this type of system is in place, there should also be leak detection sensors in place so that leaks can be caught quickly.
