For securing landscape fabric, U-shaped landscape staples (which are often also called "fabric pins") are almost always the better choice over single, nail-like pins. The staple's U-shape anchors the fabric at two points, providing significantly more holding power against wind, soil movement, and foot traffic.
This two-legged design also makes them far more resistant to being pushed up by frost heave compared to a single-stake pin. While straight pins might be slightly cheaper, the superior anchoring ability of U-shaped staples makes them the more reliable and professional option for ensuring the fabric stays in place.
