What are some lesser known uses for brine ponds?

Salt production, mineral harvesting, desalination, and brine containment are the most well-known uses for brine ponds, but there are a lot of other lesser known uses, too. Where soil conditions are right, irrigation is one use for brine ponds. Brine ponds are also useful to store brine for salt sprays that are used to de-ice roads in the winter. Manufacturers that use brine rely on these ponds as storage and containment facilities.

In some areas, the soil is exceptionally saline as a result of a water table that contains brine as opposed to fresh water. Here, brine ponds are useful to pump the brine out of the water table so that the land becomes useful for agriculture. Brine stored in this way is generally either evaporated or purified so that it can be used for irrigation.
