What are the Types of Turbidity Curtains?

Turbidity curtains (a.k.a. silt curtains, silt barriers, turbidity barriers) are classified by the industry into three primary types. Type I are light duty barriers and are suitable for the mildest conditions, such as ponds, small lakes and marshes where water movement is minimal and no tidal or wave action is present. Type II are moderate duty, suitable for areas where there is a light current and wind or small waves can affect the curtain. Larger lakes, streams, canals, as well as sheltered inter-coastal and tidal areas are typical candidates. Type III is the heavy duty type that is used in challenging conditions where a strong current or wind and wave action can disturb the floating barrier. These typically use very high strength fabric and heavy duty tension elements to manage the extreme forces that come with active environments.

Aside from these broad classifications, the specifics of any particular installation can be almost infinite in variety. Additional choices relate to the depth to which the curtain extends, the type of flotation, the design and placement of anchors, choice of permeable or impermeable skirts, the shape and overall layout of the curtain system within the waterway, the types, sizes and configurations of various attachments, options for ease of installation and removal, and even the color of floating elements require attention. Depending on how long the curtain is expected to perform, durability and quality construction should be closely examined, as well as the expertise of designers and installation crews.
