EPDM is particularly durable but can still be weathered down over time due to exposure to UV radiation, chemicals, high temperatures, and microbial growth. Solvents, acids, and oils can all lead to the breakdown of the molecular structure within the EPDM rubber, leading to deteriation. This can be avoided by insuring that the material is installed properly and maintained regularly.
Additionally, high temperatures may eventually cause EPDM rubber to degrade and lose its flexibility. EPDM is resistant to extreme temperatures, so just use frequent inspections to determine once these high temperatures have begun to affect its quality. Microbial growth can also break down EPDM rubber over time, in the form of mold or mildew. When storing your EPDM liner, make sure its in a dry, well-ventilated place where moisture is unlikely to get trapped and encourage microbial growth.
