If you’re installing a new liner in your farm pond, you may be wondering what to do with the old one. There are several options to consider. First off, you could simply leave it in place and install the new liner over top the old one. In most cases, this won’t cause any undesirable reactions that will degrade the new liner—but keep in mind that if the old liner stretches or shifts, it could damage the new one. You’ll more than likely want to remove the old liner, but if you’re willing to install an underlayment between the old and new, you can leave it in place.
Other options include reusing the liner or recycling it. Farm pond liners are quite large, so this isn’t recycling that you can put out on the curb. Instead, look for companies that specialize in recycling polyethylene. They may be able to haul it away for you. Failing that, farm pond liners can take on a second life as liners for planters, waste containment liners, compost liners or any other places in which you’d want to contain materials in a watertight confinement system. You can also check with neighbors who may have smaller pond projects and can use intact portions of your liner.
