What can you grow with aquaponics?

A huge variety of plants can be grown through aquaponics, especially when nurturing young seedlings. Some plants prefer an acidic environment, like blueberries, which can be an unhealthy level for your fish. Others may have long, creeping roots that wouldn't be ideal for shallow grow beds indoors. Plants where the leaves are the product, like lettuce, kale, etc., will require less nutrients and grow faster than plants which bear fruit. However, aquaponics famers have found success growing lots of kinds of fruits, like tomatos, melons, papayas, etc.

Pretty much any plant can be grown in aquaponics, at least through the seedling stage. Leafy vegetables such as lettuce, kale and spinach are popular, but carrots, beets, cauliflower, and even houseplants and flowering plants can do well. Large, well-established systems can produce large yields of tomatoes, cucumbers, pineapples and even corn. Just like in gardens or aquariums, it’s possible to grow a variety of plants and fish together. Be sure to take into consideration the eating habits of your choices - carnivorous fish like bass may quickly eat up all your carefully bred young koi.
