What does homesteading mean?

Homesteading refers to the "back to the land" way of living that often involves growing your own food, collecting your own resources, and building/powering your own home. This is usually on a plot of land, where a family or individual works to be self-sufficient and sustainable with minimal consumption. While this traditional definition certainly still applies, the world and philosophy of homesteading has massively expanded in recent years.

Homesteading today can mean lots of things. Growing your own food, generating your own power, making your own clothes, raising your own meat. This can be as low-impact as fits your lifestyle. Even a small herb garden on a countertop and a compact compost bin can serve as a homestead within a busy city center. In some concentrated urban areas, like New York and Detroit, community lots have been utilized for community gardens. This could be an excellent way to extend your ability to be self-sustaining, even without your own private land.
