What Factors Should be Considered When Choosing a Turbidity Curtain?

It’s important to choose your turbidity curtain based on the local conditions of your project so that it will function properly, withstand expected stresses, and permit maintenance or removal as necessary. The first step is to determine which of three classifications of turbidity curtains you’ll need. Keep in mind that use of specific classes of turbidity barriers are often regulated by government agencies or contractual requirements. Type 1 curtains are designed for use in sheltered areas, where disturbances like wind, waves and current are minimal. Shallow lakes and ponds, marshes and small streams are generally good candidates for Type 1. Type 2 turbidity curtains can be used in areas with mild currents, and where wind and waves are relatively mild. Lakes, streams, canals, inter-coastal and tidal areas are some typical candidates for Type 2 curtains. Type 3 turbidity barriers are designed for more challenging conditions in open water, with moderate waves, wind and water movement. Examples include large rivers, bays and other waterways. Type 3 barriers use high-strength fabric and heavy duty tension elements designed to withstand the increased forces of these larger and more active environments.

Once your classification has been selected, consider your working area, where you’ll be positioning your curtain, and whether there are any special requirements. Curtains like this are generally constructed in 50’ or 100’ sections and can be attached end to end. You can choose marker buoys or opt for furling lines, which can help with retrieving your curtain for use in the next project. You should also consider the type of materials used and the ease of repair in case of damage. Finally, the reliability of the company and the quality of their work should weigh significantly in your choice.
