When soil or mulch starts to accumulate on top of landscape fabric, it can create a new layer where weed seeds may germinate. Over time, wind, rain, and organic matter naturally deposit small amounts of dirt or debris above the fabric.
This buildup can trap moisture and form a shallow growing medium that allows weeds to take root above the barrier. Fortunately, these weeds are usually easy to remove because their roots don’t reach through the fabric into the soil below. Regularly raking or replenishing mulch can help prevent too much buildup, keeping the fabric effective and maintaining a clean, well-kept appearance in your landscape.
