A homestead refers to a home, usually on a plot of land, where a family or individual works to be self-sufficient and sustainable with minimal consumption. While this traditional definition certainly still applies, the world and philosophy of homesteading has massively expanded in recent years. This is a 'back to the land' idea of living which prioritizes self-reliancy and attempts to leave behind as much of the consumer lifestyle as possible.
If a plot of land isn't available to be worked, homesteading can look a little different than the traditional farm. Self-reliance can be a small garden located on an apartment balcony, or just a few herb plants growing on a countertop. Composting can be done indoors, in compact, smell-proof containers. Sewing, crocheting, herbalism, all these skills can still be utilized today to maximize self-sufficiency.
