An aquifer is a section of porous rock or sediment found underneath the earth that is completely saturated with groundwater. Water gets trapped in aquifers as it seeps into the soil. These are pockets of saturated soil or rock that contains the water underground. Wells are often drilled into underground aquifers in order to draw water up towards the surface.
Precipitation that soaks into the earth recharges the aquifer as it seeps into the soil. Wells that draw up water and natural springs remove water from the aquifer.
