What is an urban homestead?

An urban homestead is found within city limits, sometimes even an apartment complex, and is a way of sustainable living without necessarily working a large plot of private land. There are lots of ways to make homesteading work, even within a busy city center. Small compact greenhouses are available pre-built, and online in DIY forums. These can be nestled in a backyard, or even on a patio/balcony in some cases. Even without a greenhouse, small plants can be grown virtually anywhere as long as their needs are met and their temperature/humidity is right. There are ways to save space even while you begin filling your small condo with plants. Vertical farming takes advantage of vertical open space which is rarely utilized. Plants are stacked upon one another, either hanging or suspended, and water is delivered to the topmost plants, letting gravity do the rest of the work. Look online for options that other gardeners have found while working in small spaces. There are lots of creative options to make the most of your space, no matter how small.

Urban homesteading usually means that animals are out of the question. Although, even a small yard has opportunities to take advantage of some animal products. Bees and rabbits are small, low-impact animals who can provide, valuable, profitable materials.
