What is damping down in a greenhouse?

Damping down is used to keep plants cool inside the greenhouse by raising the humidity. Hard surfaces are covered with water, such as paths and working surfaces. As water evaporates from these surfaces, it increases the moisture level of the air and keeps the internal temperature cooler.

In the heat of the summer, or in any particuarly hot or dry weather, damping down can add extra moisture to the air when its needed most.
