What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants without soil. Small plants may be grown in a simple net or grid pot which allows the roots to grow through and hang at the bottom of the pot, where they are exposed to water enriched with a nutrient solution. Larger plants, even including small trees, are placed in a soil-less media that support larger root systems so the plants can remain upright and bear the weight of their branches.

There are a variety of hydroponics styles that differ primarily by the method of providing nutrient solution to the growing plants. Each different type of hydroponics has distinct advantages and disadvantages, so there are a several possibilities to choose from based on your budget as well as the needs of your specific plants.
