Fish fry are very fragile, aquaculture provides an artificial spawning ground in the form of nursery ponds to allow small, vulnerable fry the chance to get big and strong. These can come in the form of concrete, rubber, or other artifical ponds, a fiberglass tank, or a mesh pen within a larger body of water. This protects fry from being eaten by predators or bigger fish, and ensure that they each have a fighting chance for resources.
Once fry are around the size of your pointer finger, or between 3 and 4 inches, they are removed from the nursery pond and sent further into the growing process in the aquaculture system. Their time in the nursery has given them the chance to grow bigger than the size of their neighbor's prey, and develop the scales and fins that will help them survive.
