What is the best pond sludge remover?

When it’s time to remove the sludge from the depths of your pond, you have some options. Of course, the best one in your circumstances depends on your pond, your resources, and your affinity for exercise. There are essentially two main components of sludge which you’ll need to address: the tiny, mostly decomposed silt-like particles that puff up in brown clouds whenever the bottom is disturbed, and the larger mass of leaves, sticks, and other detritus that can still be scooped up by hand, if you were so inclined.

You’ll want to start by removing the big stuff. If your pond is small, you could use a rake, a net, or a specialized tool like a muck shovel to sweep it out. Owners of deeper ponds recommend a pool net with an extended handle. If the pole breaks, you can switch to a stronger paint extension pole. Large natural ponds could require a commercial grade pond vac or even a dredger. Once the bulk of the mass is removed, you’ll need to deal with the tiny silt particles that remain. Your existing pond bacteria will gradually decompose this remaining waste, but you can give it a boost by adding a commercial product that contains a concentrated dose of bacteria and enzymes. Keep in mind that almost all of these products recommend regular (and expensive) “maintenance” treatments. However, if you are good about scooping up fallen leaves, install a leaf net during the fall, and otherwise keeping your pond clean, your established ecosystem should be able to manage things just fine.
