What is the difference between embankment and excavated farm ponds?

Embankment ponds make use of natural features to form the pond’s banks, but they’re not as flexible as excavated ponds. When using natural embankments, you must work with the shape of the land to determine the pond’s size and shape. Natural embankments may require soil amendments or other modifications to prevent catastrophic failures or leaks during storms and flooding.

Excavated ponds are generally viewed more favorably because they allow you to build the pond to suit your agricultural needs while also giving you the ability to use clay or flexible liners as needed to prevent leaks. While they do take more in the way of excavation, it’s easy to place them where needed rather than where slopes dictate.
