What is the difference between geomembranes and geotextile liners?

Geomembrane and geotextile liners are different in their materials and their relative funciton. Geomembranes are impermeable materials made from synthetics like HDPE or RPE, designed to create a waterproof barrier. They are highly effective at preventing water seepage and are commonly used in canals where reducing water loss is a top priority.

Geotextiles, on the other hand, are permeable fabrics made from materials like polyester or polypropylene. They primarily serve as reinforcement and filtration layers, allowing water to flow through while preventing soil erosion and controlling sediment movement. Geotextiles are often used in combination with other liners, like geomembranes, to improve stability and prevent clogging.
