What is the ideal climate for a brine pond?

If you’re thinking about brine ponds, it’s important to understand that not all locations are ideal for this type of evaporation pond. The goal for a pond designed to evaporate brine is to have high evaporation rates. Ideally, these ponds will be situated in warm, dry climates to help speed evaporation. Cold weather and high humidity will slow evaporation, and in areas with high enough humidity, it may prove impossible to dry salt enough for harvesting.

Steady seasonal winds are also beneficial for brine ponds. Wind is a major factor that can speed evaporation greatly—especially in brine ponds using evaporative membranes or other measures to speed the process. Low precipitation rates are key, too. Storms and frequent precipitation serve only to refill evaporation ponds, which hinders the evaporative process. If, however, evaporation is not the primary purpose of a brine pond, then there is much more leeway with regards to the climate where such a pond can be placed.
