Canal liners can experience several types of damage which reduce their effectiveness. Physical damage, such as punctures, tears, or abrasions, can occur from sharp objects, heavy machinery, or debris in the canal. Over time, exposure to UV rays, extreme temperatures, or harsh chemicals can cause the liner material to degrade.
For flexible liners, improper installation can result in wrinkles or gaps, which may cause leaks. Concrete liners are susceptible to cracking due to shifting soil, temperature fluctuations, or high water pressure. Erosion along the edges of the liner or beneath it can also cause the material to shift or become dislodged. When a liner becomes damaged, it may lead to increased water seepage, erosion, or the need for costly repairs.
