What kind of maintenance is required for aeroponics?

The maintenance required for aeroponics is typically less than that required for other grow systems, although it's different. One chore that can be a real headache, particularly for inexperienced growers or those managing a very large operation, is the need to test and adjust the chemical balance of your nutrient solution several times per week, until you've found a system that works. The pH, measured by EC, can vary quite a bit, based on whether your water is hard or soft, and even based on temperature. It's critical to keep this value within an acceptable range.

Aside from regular water testing, Aeroponics setups (particularly high pressure versions, need regular inspection of spray nozzles to ensure they're not clogging up. The nozzles that produce such tiny droplets are vulnerable to mineral deposits, so if you have hard water, that can be a real issue. It's important to keep your growing space clean and free of organic waste like pieces of stems, leaves and roots to avoid inviting in insects and pathogens that could spread to your plants. Whenever you harvest a crop, and before you plant a new one, you'll need to disinfect your root chamber. It's not a difficult process - about as complicated as cleaning a bathroom. Finally, just like any other controlled environment system, you'll need to regularly inspect the components in your system. Since aeroponics crops are more vulnerable to system failures, this preventive maintenance should probalby be performed more frequently than in hydroponics.
