Heap leach pads require an impermeable geomembrane liner to prevent the leaching solutions from infiltrating the surrounding soil and groundwater. Placed beneath the heap leach pads, these liners isolate the leachate which contains chemicals used to extract valuable minerals from ore. This prevents the leachate from migrating to the environment and contaminating ecosystems or bodies of water.
Geomembranes also help control the flow and distribution of leachate within the heap. This ensures uniform percolation and maximizes mineral recovery. By containing the leach solution, geomembranes enable efficient collection and management of the pregnant solution for further processing.
