What should I do with pond equipment during winter?

Most equipment should be removed and stored somewhere safe during the winter months, so that they aren't damaged by snow or freezing water. Remove all the netting above your pond at the end of fall once you think the leaves have pretty much stopped falling. Snow and ice can seriously damage netting, so make sure to store it indoors before things get too cold. Next, remove your pump and filter from the pond. Clean them and place them inside for storage. For ponds with waterfalls and skimmers, disconnect your pump and check valve, and allow the water to drain from your plumbing and waterfall.

Wintertime is a great time to do maintenance on your equipment and even to prepare for upgrades. Check each piece thoroughly for excessive wear, worn parts or cracked seals, then dry it and store it in an insulated space that's unlikely to freeze. Most pond pumps will need to be stored in a bucket or tub of clean water so that seals stay moist and don't crack or get damaged.
