Where do wells get water?

Wells are drilled into underground aquifers in order to pump the water to the surface. These aquifers are where groundwater has settled after seeping deep into the soil.

If an aquifer discharges too much water before it has the chance to recharge, it can deplete completely. In these cases, a well will no longer be able to pump water from an empty aquifer.
