Where should aquaponics be installed?

This depends on the size of your system, a greenhouse holding pounds of fish will be positioned much differently than a small countertop aquarium and herb garden. You'll need access to electricity in order to power the heaters, filters, and pumps that are included in your design. The location you choose will also depend on what kind of light you want your plants to have access to. In a greenhouse, or outside in the elements, will allow your plants to feed on natural sunlight, but this can also restrict your growing time if it gets too cold or too dark outside. Indoors, your plants will be protected from the cold during the winter months, but will also require grow lamps to replace sunlight.

Your grow beds and tanks can come in a wide array of sizes. Some home aquaponics systems are as simple as a few fish giving a couple of basil plants the nutrients they need. A lot of home-chefs are particularly pleased with their own easy-to-access herb garden, and will want it within hands reach. These tanks can come as small as 10 gallons, and can rest on a kitchen counter, in a garage, or atop a rooftop. Commercial ventures can span 10,000 sqft warehouses, with rows and rows of hundred gallon tanks. How much you intend to invest, and eventually harvest, will help determine where it's best for your system to live.
