Why is oxygen important in aeroponics?

Plants use oxygen to facilitate nutrient absorption, and aeroponics is the system that supplies it best. Even hydroponics systems using the perfect mixture of top of the line nutrient solution won't see healthy growth unless oxygen is present so those nutrients can be absorbed. In fact, hydroponics growers typically add aerators to their nutrient tanks to maximize dissolved oxygen.

Oxygen is so important for the roots that farmers till their soil and houseplants are potted with lightweight potting soil to ensure air is always available. Without that treatment, soil can become compacted or soggy, which doesn't allow oxygen to move into the soil for the roots to use. When no oxygen is available, plants suffocate and die. On the reverse side, it's the high oxygen exposure in aeroponics systems that produce plants that are stronger, grow faster with more abundant produce, and may be higher in nutrition.
