Floating plants are excellent ways to add shade and shelter to your pond while also filtering out toxins and providing clean water. Fish will nibble on the edges of floating plants and use their shade to hide from predators. Floating plants are whimsical and attractive additions to a pond, providing greenery all the way across the water’s surface. Floating plants also serve as excellent aerators, adding valuable oxygen through the water’s surface.
- Water Hyacinth: These are incredibly popular choices for floating plants due to their quick rate of growth and beautiful purple flowers. Each plant can grow up to 20 flowers at a time. These plants don’t do well in cold temperatures and may die once things freeze. In contrast, water hyacinth thrives in warm climates, and may grow until they form a thick mat on the surface of the water. This isn’t good for fish, or your water, so be sure to cut back growths before this takes place.
- Duckweed: This is a free-floating perennial plant that grows in a thin carpet of tiny, round leaves. These grow incredibly quickly, and are an excellent source of nutrition for ducks, beavers, birds, fish, and frogs. Duckweed discourages mosquito and algae growth and is excellent at filtering out pollutants from the water. Be careful that this plant doesn’t grow too quickly and ends up blocking out light from permeating the water’s surface.
- Water Lettuce: This plant is also a free-floating perennial. It grows soft, light green leaves that resemble small heads of lettuce. Feathery roots dangle freely into the water, providing food and shelter for fish and insects. Water lettuce is very resistant against pests and disease. However, do some research into your area, as water lettuce is considered invasive in some parts of the US.
- Floating Fern: This plant grows small, free floating ferns that layer upon one another, forming a mat of leaves on the water’s surface. These spread quickly and indefinitely in the right conditions and should be monitored or trimmed to prevent it from blocking out sun from the water. These are hardy plants that are resistant to many kinds of disease and pests alike.
