Plants are essential players when it comes to properly oxygenating, aerating, and filtering your pond’s water. Plants whose primary purpose is to add air and remove toxins from the water are often entirely submerged in the water, so that the maximum amount of plant is in contact with the water. As the plant photosynthesizes, oxygen is released directly into the water.
- Arrowhead: These perennials can grow as marginals or entirely submerged within your pond. These plants are loved by ducks, snapping turtles, and muskrats. The underground tubers were often harvested by Native Americans and used in cooking like potatoes. Arrowhead grows up to 4 feet tall and about 3 feet wide. These are resistant to most kinds of disease and pest, although it's best to keep an eye out for spider mites and aphids.
- Anacharis: Also known as ‘Canadian Waterweed’ is a semi-evergreen perennial that grows completely submerged within the water. This is an excellent choice as an oxygenator as it grows completely underneath the water's surface. They can grow up to 3 inches tall and a few feet wide. These spread quickly and can easily overwhelm larger bodies of water. In smaller ponds however, trimming or clipping stems can easily be executed to control population.
- Eelgrass: This is also known as water celery in some areas. These are truly evergreen perennials that grow entirely under the water. These bloom white flowers that grow to the water’s surface from mid-spring to late summer. These are excellent oxygenators and provide valuable filtration and shelter for aquatic life. Ducks, turtles, and fish feed on the roots, tubers, shoots, and seeds. These are native to the US, and non-invasive.
- Hornwort: Also known as “Coon’s Tail,” Hornwort can grow anywhere from 6 inches to 10 feet in height. These plants are often free-floating or loosely anchored in mud. These are excellent choices for removing toxins and chemicals from water. Hornwort is often utilized in order to remove chromium, lead, arsenic, and other chemicals from the water.
- Mermaid Weed: Also known as Saw-Tooth Hygro. This is a very hardy plant growing up to 6 inches in height. These range anywhere from green to bright red. These plants prefer full sun and water with high CO2 and nutrient levels.
