Question: I’ve read that water loss is a big problem for mining operations. Why is this the case, and how does BTL Liners help? Answer: The process of mining to extract minerals and metals from the earth is a water-intensive activity. Miners use water throughout the mining process, from cooling the equipment and separating waste from valuable minerals, to controlling dust. Water is often recirculated in an effort to minimize water discharge and consumption, however the concentration of contaminants increases as water is reused. The use of water in mining operations can lead to over consumption of local resources, which can stress water supplies. If safety and containment measures aren’t taken, mining waste can contaminate local water supplies, threatening drinking water and ecosystems. By one estimate, many mines throughout the world lose over 500 gallons of water per second, making concerns about water usage and contamination urgent.
