BTL joins over 165 CEOs and business leaders in endorsing the development, construction and completion of the Keystone XL Pipeline. We believe that construction of the pipeline will bring much needed jobs and a path to energy independence for the United States. The Keystone XL Pipeline is a proposed 1,179-mile, 36-inch-diameter crude oil pipeline beginning in Hardisty, Alberta, and extending south to Steele City, Nebraska. As it connects to other existing and proposed pipelines, it will have the capacity to transport 830,000 barrels of oil per day to Gulf Coast and Midwest refineries. Jobs The Keystone XL alone will put 9,000 U.S. laborers to work on the construction of this critical energy infrastructure project—work for pipefitters, welders, electricians, heavy equipment operators and more. In addition, current pipeline projects will add 7,000 manufacturing jobs, from the manufacturing of pipe in Arkansas and pump motors made in Ohio, to transformers built in Pennsylvania. In other words, workers in almost every state in the U.S. will benefit from construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline. Energy Independence At its completion, the Keystone XL Pipeline will transport 830,000 barrels per day of crude oil from Canada and the United States to refineries on the Gulf Coast, where it is expected to replace much of the higher-priced oil currently imported from overseas. The creation of such a “hardwired” link between the booming U.S. and Canadian shale plays and the U.S. Gulf Coast, the Keystone XL Pipeline will be critical in helping the United States reduce its dependence on oil from Venezuela and the Middle East by up to 40%. Safety Pipelines are, by far, the safest and most efficient method for moving crude oil and natural gas. Brigham McCown, a hazardous material transportation expert and former administrator of the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, said that “U.S. federal government statistics show that pipelines are 16 times safer than rail and 189 times safer than commercial motor vehicles in shipping crude oil, comparing freight tons shipped. On a per [mile] basis, pipelines are 451 times safer.” The Keystone XL Pipeline will be the most technologically advanced pipeline built in the United States. TransCanada, the company responsible for the construction and maintenance of the project, has voluntarily incorporated 57 special safety conditions into its design and construction. As a result, the State Department’s environmental impact statement found that Keystone XL would operate with a degree of safety greater than any other pipeline in the United States. Our Support BTL Liners believes that jobs should be created and preserved here at home whenever possible. We’ve demonstrated that commitment through our exclusive use of materials sourced only in North America. We support initiatives designed to establish energy independence from less stable countries who do not necessarily share our country’s values. For these reasons, along with our strong commitment to environmental safety, we believe that development, construction and completion of the Keystone XL Pipeline is in the best interest of our country both now and in the future.
