Processed water holding pits are far from the only ponds, and similar structures, on the hydraulic fracturing site. There are plenty of opportunities for digging into the ground and making the most of on-site storage. If you’re shopping for liners, consider also planning out these other pits and ponds that can benefit from the use of an impermeable barrier.
Fresh Water Supply Pits
Hydraulic fracturing often requires anywhere from 2 to 15 million gallons of water per operation. Finding and storing this much water can be a challenge, especially since many mining and drilling operations are located in particularly arid areas. Open storage ponds are ideal because they capture any ambient rainfall, while making the most of water pumped from the ground, delivered by trucks, or diverted from local rivers. The water can be held near the fracturing site and pumped with minimal electrical costs.
Deep Bury Pits for Waste
When there’s only a small amount of relatively solid waste left after water treatment and processing, it has to go somewhere that nobody will come in contact with it. A deep, bury pit is a great alternative for waste that is too thick and solid to be injected into a well. The pit is dug similarly to the well, but it’s also lined so that the waste can’t seep out over time. Caps and covers are also used from the same impermeable liner material to keep water from mixing in from above.
Treatment Ponds and Wetlands
Of course, treatment ponds and constructed wetlands also benefit from lining just as much as storage pits. Long-term treatment increases the risk of exposure to the local environment since the wastewater has more time to seep or leak out. Don’t skimp on wetland construction since these features are usually designed to enrich the environment and attract wildlife.
With the right liners, every kind of pit and pond on the hydraulic fracturing site can stay safe and contribute to water processing.
